Most of the author’s websites contain excerpts from their books. A few also have free short stories. A very few will even have entire books for you to read for free (Bonus!). You’ll be able to read some to a lot of their writing and get a real feel for whether or not you want to buy their books.
· Bought a book in hardcover because that’s the only way it’s been printed, and then soon after, saw the same book come out in paperback? Or worse, because you didn’t know it came in paperback?

Author sites usually have news about books that are coming soon, such as paperback versions of their books and ebook versions. You might just have to wait a short while to find that book in a less expensive version.
- Bought a book written by one of your favorite authors and after reading some, realized you've already read it but they'd changed the cover.
Get lists of your favorite author's books from their websites, mark off what you 've read, and then keep the list with you. A tiny notebook can be invaluable to keep you from making those kind of mistakes.
· Bought a book that looked good and found that it was one in a series, but not the first one. Then bought the first book, only to find that you don’t really like it, so buying the original book was a waste of money?

All authors have a list of their books on their websites. They also will tell you if they’re part of a series and what order they should be read in. A note of warning here – even if the author tells you that their books can be read out of order, it’s always better to read them in the order they were written. Besides being able to understand the story better if it’s one in a series, you’ll be able to enjoy the author’s growth as a writer.
